Take one New Jersey born, street-wise, self-made millionaire, add six orphan girls of all nationalities ranging in ages from eight to seventeen, toss in an English butler to take care of them all and you have the recipe for Rags to Riches. Rags to Riches is a lighthearted, musical-comedy-drama series that aired on NBC-TV in 1987-88.
Joseph Bologna stars as Nick Foley, the owner of Foley’s Frozen Foods, a suave bachelor, man of the town, who adopts five street-smart girls from an orphanage about to close as a political maneuver designed to boost his personal image. What he doesn’t expect is to fall in love with the girls and open his home and his heart to them on a permanent basis. The adjustment on both sides is huge, as girls who never had parents acquire a father with no parenting experience. They find themselves in the lap of luxury with someone who cares but is struggling to cope.
The new, extended Foley family includes Rose, the eldest at 17, who is both serious and funny and a born leader. Diane, at 16, is boy crazy and clothes crazy. Marva is 15 and a would-be entrepreneur. She is a wisecracking, positive thinker who wants to follow in Nick’s footsteps. Patty, at 14, is the tomboy of the group, good at every sport, but when it comes to schoolwork, she remains on the bench. At 8, Mickey is the baby of the family but as loveable as they come.
The trials and tribulations of the Foley’s and how they cope with becoming an instant family living in unexpected luxury with a man who has never loved anyone but himself sets the stage for the series.
Rags to Riches is set in the early 1960’s with clothes and music to match. Each episode contains at least two music videos of vintage rock ‘n’ roll tunes with new lyrics sung by the cast to comment on the story.
